The 5 Stages of Design Thinking

Let’s get to the heart of the matter, the 5 stages of Design Thinking are:

  1. Empathize
  2. Define
  3. Ideate
  4. Prototype
  5. Test

1. Empathize: Understand the User

The first step of Design Thinking is to thoroughly understand the users to grasp their needs, problems, and aspirations. Techniques used include:

  • Data analysis to detect behavior patterns.

2. Define: Specify the Problem

With the collected information, it is analyzed and synthesized to define the problem clearly and specifically. A precise definition facilitates the creation of effective solutions.

  • Customer Journey Map: allows identifying pain points in the user experience.
  • Problem Statements (How Might We…): transform findings into design opportunities.

3. Ideate: Generate Creative Solutions

In this stage, teams generate innovative ideas to solve the identified problem. Creativity and collaboration are encouraged through methodologies such as:

  • Brainstorming: idea generation without initial limitations.
  • SCAMPER: technique that allows modifying existing ideas.
  • Mind Maps: to organize and connect concepts.

4. Prototype: Build Test Models

The most promising concepts are transformed into low-fidelity prototypes to validate their viability before investing in full development. These can be:

  • Wireframes or paper sketches.
  • Interactive mockups in digital tools.
  • Physical models in the case of tangible products.

5. Test: Evaluate and Improve

The final step of Design Thinking is to test the prototypes with real users to obtain feedback. This allows identifying errors and making adjustments before the final launch.
